Need Help Installing a 1990 5.3 Gauge Cluster in My 82 C10
« on: July 24, 2015, 06:00:15 pm »
I need some help on trying to figure out how to install a 5.3 gauge cluster in my C10. I saw a couple of videos on You Tube of people having a newer gauge installed on their trucks. These of course where trucks that had the 5.3 swap in them. The only issue I have having is that they did not pass on the information of how it was done. Does anybody know or have advice on how this could be done? Really would like to see if I can manage to do this.

Can someone help figure out a way that I can install a 1990 Suburban cluster that has a electrical speedometer into my 1982 C10? Who do I go about doing this, since my truck has a 5.3 swap with tranny. The tranny has a electrical reading for the speedo. Do I just re pin the harness, like take the wires out of the old harness and put them into the 90 harness? Does anybody have a pin diagram of a 90 surburban gauge cluster and also to a 82 C10?

I just re-pinned mine. Basically I just traced the printed circuit on the back of each cluster and figured out which wires had to be switched around

How did you know which wires form the stock harness were the ones to switch over?

You need more than just the cluster. There's a drac box around the ashtray its a white box it takes the signal from the speed sensor and sends it to the ecm, cluster and abs.
The drac takes the 40 pulse per revolution of the driveshaft and converts that to 2000 pulses per mile to the ecm and speedo, 4000 pulses per mile to the cruise and 128000 per mile to the abs.

The dracs boxes are also different for each gear ratio. But if you look at your old cluster and trace the contacts from lets say the volt meter to the pig tail it will show you what wires go to the volt meter.

But if you have a 4l60e you don't need the DRAC. I just ran the speedo output wire from the ECU to the cluster and it worked fine.

Gents,
I am trying to install a 5.3 gauge cluster that I removed from a Suburban at the salvage yard. How do I go about install this into my 82 C10? I have seen a few people on you tube do this, but they did not leave any feedback on how they did it. If someone could guide me where I could find some information on how to do this, it would be greatly appreciated.

I assume you mean one from a 88-91 Suburban, yes? You'll have to repin/rewire the plug for the back of the cluster. Trace the printed circuit to find out which wire goes where. For the speedo circuit, there will be an output wire from the engine computer. Connect this to the pin/wire for the speedo circuit.
