241C shift linkage

So I'm having a little trouble connecting my 4WD shift linkage to my transfer case on my project vehicle. I have a driver's side drop NP241C t/case and the shift linkage is from a 90s K1500 with the plastic insert. I've had no luck getting it to pop onto the shifter. I've tried to pop off the plastic insert and it doesn't want to come off the linkage arm.
What am I doing this the wrong?

well, I actually got the plastic ring off and installed on the shifter and popped the linkage on. I guess I was worried about breaking it. proven wrong.
