My '86 C10 rescued from the junkyard..
« on: August 16, 2015, 08:12:37 pm »
Picked up this halfway-running 1986 C10 for next to nothing (in my opinion)..

Was a 4.3 V6.  Someone stuffed a 350 crate engine in with an RV cam, and used the same Q-jet that came off the 4.3.  Trans is a TH400 with unknown miles but shifts firm and comfortable.  Rear end is a standard 10 bolt open carrier 2.73.

I put a stock granny cam in and changed to an Edelbrock 1405 manual carb with the stock iron intake.  Other than that, the 350 crate engine has very low miles and uses no oil.

I really wanted to do an off-frame restore but found out that I believe I enjoy using a beat up old farm truck for that purpose more than I would a "showroom" vehicle..  That's my excuse anyway for not having the time, talent or $$$ to do it all..   I use a lot of unconventional methods for repair and "upgrades" but it's done RIGHT.. again.. in my opinion.

This is a true "farm truck," I bought it with intentions to use it for that purpose and have been doing so for several years.  It's a "throw stuff in the back and not worry about it" kind of truck and serves a great purpose.

The way it runs reminds me of my 1985 Monte Carlo SS, which I still have, and hope to get restored one day.

Welcome from central California. I like what you have done with the truck. The dash and door panel inserts, AC vent panels, it all looks different but clean. The floor board looks great too. Oh and the camo, I like camo too, I have similar floor mats by real-tree.

Thanks..  I have a large assortment of misc. materials collected from servicing farm machinery for many years.  The point of the vehicle was to obtain a good "farm truck" for just that purpose with the least amount of $$$ possible.

To this date I think I might have a total of $1800 in it, which includes the original purchase price.

I'm a full time turkey farmer in eastern NC and out here we use whatever we can get our hands on at the time.

Will post some more interesting pics as they come along.

Nice project.  Another square body saved.
Don't see them in the yards like we used to.

Thanks..  Yep, too many of these fell victim to the cash for clunkers program.  Here in eastern NC, the farmers and handymen are still using them for work vehicles.

It took many hours in the garage to get this one running correctly and cleaned up.  Whether it looks pretty or not, I'm not sure where else a man could buy a strong, easy to service practical truck for under $2000 these days.
