Torque converter for 4L80E
« on: September 01, 2015, 09:28:49 pm »
Hi,

I've posted previously on my desire to swap in a 4L80E on my 74 GMC.  I am rebuilding a somewhat built 489 stroker, we're thinking around 500-600 ft lbs of torque.  Right now where I'm stuck is the torque converter.  Does anyone know if a stock rebuilt one would be sufficient, or will I need a beefed up one?  I spoke with a few places, and I got recommendations all over the place, prices from 500-1100.  I don't plan on racing, but I might tow with it a little bit, and of course get on it every now and then.

I am running a stock one in my truck.  Unless your valvetrain calls for one stock should be fine.

This is on your turbocharged motor?  That helps a lot!

on my 91 v3500 cummins i kept the 4l80e the stock cummins puts out 400-460 ft lbs around 1600 rpms. im still running the stock 350 converter. granted i havnt had it on the road for long (a couple months) but ive put alot of miles on it and i havnt been real easy and ive towed a heavy trailer gvw was over 12000 lbs for a truck that weights 7500 or so. havnt had any problems yet and from what i heard the 4l80e will handle the cummins with no problems.
