Indecisive Wheel Re-style, New Look

Hey guys, ok so every once in a while I get this wild hair up my butt and I decide that I need to change something on the truck. So this time it's my wheels, I like them, but I want to change the way they look somehow just to make it different and new, the current look is kinda boring now.

These are my current wheels and tires.


Now that part that I'm tired of is that stupid chrome soup can in the middle that they call a hub cover. It has no way of centering itself on the wheel, so everytime I put the wheels back on, I have to very carefully center them as best I can other wise it looks like I'm driving around with bent rims cuz those covers wobble in circles. Also, my lug nuts are "mag" type and that is a pain in the tailgate as it is, getting all of those things started is a freaking joke. Plus they are old, the chrome is beat up and they just look like doggy doo-doo.

So I know I do not want to change wheels entirely or paint them or just leave the covers off cuz that looks stupid too, other then that I'm not really sure what I want. I do want something with a bowtie on it tho, that I know I think I would like.

I've been thing about trying to put newer style center caps on just to change the look up, that requires lug nuts with external threads and for obvious reasons those type don't work on these wheels. So, any ideas or suggestions.

Can my wheels be drilled to except those types of lug nuts for center caps? Is there a special lug nut that is mag type with external threads to allow for this type of fit? Here are some of these center cap styles of been looking at. I like what the newer factory wheels came with.

Not sure where this wheel came from but it looks pretty good. Mainly looking at the center cap.

Hey, I'll give you mine. I have three now. I couldn't figure out how to remove them, so I beat the first one apart to learn. LOL. I'll say that those plastic, fake lug nuts are surprisingly tough though!

Well that's really nice of you Dr_Snooz, which style do you have?

I figured out that the wheel I pictured first (the one on the red truck) is off an 8 lug Hummer H2, it has a Chevy center cap obviously. I figured it out today when I saw an H2 in the parking lot of work with those exact wheels and Hummer center caps.

So I found these on Ebay, not looking to buy just yet. They look more late 80's early 90s style, so closer to the 73-87 time period but not so new like they are from 2008. Also what I found interesting is what looks like a metal ring on the under side. I think they snap onto the wheel instead of using those plastic twist on faux lug nuts. I think they snap onto the lug nuts them selves. Ide want to have one in my hand to experiment with just to see how they might fit on my wheels.

My girlfriend's dad has these original wheels off his 08 GMC 3500 D-Max. I know he talked about selling them but they are still sitting on the side of the garage. I could put chevy centers on them. I think they are 17s tho so that might be a deal breaker, I'm not getting new tires, mine are only 2 years old and over 80% thread left.

The wheels looked good and worked great.  only problem for me was, when looking straight on at the front or rear of the truck, they were tucked in too far by 2.5 to 3"  because of the newer trucks offset difference vs the old trucks.

Other than being tucked under the fender like a 50's car, they looked great.  great from the side, but 50's car lookin from  the front or back.  but some wheel spacers would fix that up if that bugs ya.

If Ida had the wheels the OP posted at the bottom of the first post, I probably wouldnt have gotten my current wheels.

I've actually enjoyed following your truck at times. Yours is one of my personal favorites on this site. The wheels do look great on your truck but it's not what I want for mine. Those model of wheels come off the lower trim level and work truck models. I'm looking for something more like a top of the line trim level like LTZ, like my user name.

You know, it's been awhile. I think they look like this, but not nearly as new and shiny:



They are buried somewhere in storage and it's entirely possible that I threw them out. I've been paring down a lot. I'll look for them the next time I'm there.

Cool thanks. No rush either, I may not do anything at all, I may snap and get new rims all together, I honestly don't know what I want. I'm not in a hurry to figure it out either.

Yea see that's not horrible, tho I like the first style I showed a little better. I want something that compliments the truck being a 3/4 ton camper special. I don't want something that makes it look like a half ton or more like a muscle car. But I also want something that flows with the physical shapes and lines of truck.

i believe hummer wheels are all 17s also.  so if your not wanting to buy new tires, hummers may not work for you

Well that could be an issue, I hadn't thought to check, thanks for pointing that out, that's probably a little important.

H3s are 16" the old military ones are 16.5. but the h2 were 17. but i thought there was something about the offset that made them not work with out trucks?
