1976 M1008 vs 1981 K25 Camper Special
« on: October 17, 2015, 09:02:55 pm »
Well as many others on this site I'm suffering from possibly buying another classic truck, a 1976 M1008 with a 350ci.
Right now i'm working on my 1981 K25 Camper Special, needs a few things but it runs and drives just fine, i stumbled across this M1008 with 100 000km on it that i'm debating picking up and it got me thinking;

What is the difference between my 81 CS and a 76 CUCV?

Also I just read about the M1028 Shelter carrier, weighs a touch less but can haul more? Anyone know about these or how to tell the difference? Is it possible to upgrade to the same level as one of these?

well the cucv isnt real if its a 76 they started in the mid 80s. but besides that the k30 will have the dana 60. but the 60 didnt come out till 77 in gm so it should have a dana 44 which is comparable to the 10 bolt in strength

Are you from Canada?
The Canadian Military used Chevy pick ups during the mid 70's, although technically they are not CUCV's.
It sounds like that's what you might have.
Irish is right, its not a M1008.
Any pictures?

Yep in Alberta, just saw the truck it is a giant POS.
Front axle was swapped for the Dana 44, 350ci swap with a carb I couldn't even identify, different box
on it that was all beat up and the np205 in it.
Needless to say it's got nothing I want!

Motor, front diff and the box and that was just a taking a quick look at it, I think I'm much better off with my camper special maybe I'll just grab some 1 ton axles from the wreckers after I install the 6" lift

What motor & front axle were you expecting to find?

It came with a Dana 44 from the factory. I don't know what came stock in those trucks, i know it would be a 6.2 in ours but that didn't come out till 82. So its completely possible its all still original

I'm OK with a 350 but this one is in a bad need of a rebuild so it's worthless to me, as for the front diff I was hoping for something heavier duty than the dana 44 as that's what I already have in the camper special and was hoping you go heavier.

Like Irish said, its probably all original.
You can't fault the truck for retaining the factory equipment.
