Replacement ac fan speed switch
« on: November 11, 2015, 03:07:32 pm »
I purchased a new fan speed switch and the new one is missing a terminal post. Does anyone know if this is needed? It was a separate plug. If so, anyone have a part number of where I can get the right one? 74 with ac.

Some trucks have 3 speed fans others have 4, that may be the issue, not sure just an idea

For the 73-75 trucks - Whenever A/C is selected and the temperature lever is all the way to the left, the A/C system is in recirculate and the blower defaults to Hi speed regardless of fan switch position.  Connection is through the extra terminal. Move the temperature lever to the right and the system goes to fresh air and normal fan switch operation resumes.

With the new switch, the fan speed would be what is selected on the fan switch, it wouldn't default to Hi blower in recirculate.

Jason,

Where can I get the correct part? I got this one from advance auto parts but don't see another option.   doesn't have it either.

Is the new switch Delco?  I'd suspect the original switch with the extra connector on it has been superseded to the new switch you have. The new one should be fine, except recirculate will have extra motor positions to choose (i.e., lo & med fan with recirculate).

I really don't know where to point you for the original switch, maybe some others will chime in with a definite source. Here are some thoughts on what I'd consider doing...

1) Take the original switch apart and clean up the contacts inside, or;

2) Take both the original and new switch apart and combine the front of the new switch with the rear of the old switch (still would need to clean the contacts on the old), or;

3) Get the original GM part number for the switch (not a superseded number) and do an internet search for an NOS switch. A Chevy/GMC parts dept. should be able to look up the correct number.  Sometimes prices for NOS switches, though, can be quite staggering.

^Good stuff,  that new switch will work fine just like it was 76 and up. I actually leave that extra wire off so it doesn't default to high blower when in max.

Gm Parts manual calls for 469368       5 terminal 73-77 and also for 78+ 469368      4 terminal.
There is a note stating the switch becomes  4 terminal in 78 and the extra wire is not used on earlier years.

The switched change to a 4 prong but the number stayed the same. So it comes 4 or 5 terminal depending on year manufactured.

336408 is also the 5 terminal switch which was replaced by the 469368 in other applications.

And 3998461 an earlier # was replaced by the 336408 but that's all could find in the parts history, no idea how many terms but I would guess 5.
