Question
« on: November 15, 2015, 07:04:10 pm »
I have an 85 Chevy C10 long bed, 350 2wd. Question is, it has 2 broken leaf springs on passenger side. It has a total of 8 leaves. Does anyone have experience removing and/or swapping leaves. I want to drop the rear a little anyway and was wondering how much i can expect if I remove 1 or 2 leaves. Was eventually looking to lose 4" in the back and 2" or so in the front.
Thanks

NO, not safe as springs will start to sag even more, eventually ending up in same situation or worse-although you can lose the thick bottom "overload" spring with a small possibility that wheel hop will become more of a problem

from what I know , 1/2 tons(C10 or K10) could have up to 7 leaves, 3/4 tons(C20 or K20) could have 5 to 9, 1 tons(c30 and K30) could have 8 to 14(overload springs)

so at some point it sounds like someone might have installed a set of 3/4 ton springs

Anythings possible, VIN reads a 305 but previous owner, a friend of a family member, assures me its a 350 now.

My c-10 has 8 leaves also, factory build/spec sheet states "heavy duty rear susp".   Weird, everybody wants to change the height of their truck, huh...not sure why.

Assures you? They are nearly identical on the outside. Easy enough to check it out yourself. Get the block number off the back of the engine right behind the distributor. When I said easy I meant after this act of circus acrobatics and elementary gymnastics. A mirror and the ability to read backwards letters and numbers helps. Or, if the heads have never been removed (the engine rebuilt) there will be a pad under the front right head, directly on the front of the engine. It should have some punched in numbers there. If there aren't the engine has been surfaced enough to cut them off. http://www.mortec.com/location.htm or find one that helps more than that one^^ https://www.google.com/search?q=number+pad%2C+chevy+engine%2C+right+head+area&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Oh, I know where to find the info, been down that road before, not worried about it too much, I have a 350 4 bolt in my garage waiting for rebuild to go in it. Have a nice 288 duration 444 lift cam and a holley contender intake gonna be sweet, then I'll pull the other one and see whats what, easier to read the numbers when its on an engine stand. Thanks though.
