best gears for my k10?
« on: November 16, 2015, 02:23:14 am »
i have a 1983 chevy k10 with i believe stock 2.73 gears. it has
-edelbrock perfomer intake
-holley 600 cfm carb
-accel supercoil/plugs
-mild comp cam
-6 inches of suspension lift
-33" super swampers
-long tube headers
-custom dual exhaust
-few other random things
-TH300 auto 3 speed trans

what i want to know is what gears would be best. it either has 2.73 or 3.08 i havent pulled off the diff cover yet to check. what gears would be good for being able to get going a little faster without burning through too much fuel?

In your other post you mention wanting to do burn outs.
You want 4.10's

yeah 4.10 with 33s you will be burning tires and gas even faster. i have 4.10s in my 79 with 38s the best mpgs i got was 10 and that was keeping it under 60 and taking off slow. you cant have the best of both wolds, you have to decide higher gears will burn tires and cost money, higher gears will cost you more fuel and money. so it will be a double negative. you havnt said your age yet but i imagine 17-19 and we all had the same attitude when were younger. now since i grew up i no longer want a real loud truck nor do i want a rough ride nor do i want to spend money that can pay a bill lol. but have fun while youre young, cheapest way to change gears is new axles. stay away from 3/4 unless you want to buy new rims. that being said 3.73 gears should get you where you want to go and ill add this more gas (bigger cfm) doesnt = more power and keep your parts working together dont build a engine with a low rpm cam but a high rpm intake

Concur.  3.73 (which I have on more or less same setup as you, but with 31" tires) or 4.11.

If you plan to keep the 33's 3.73. If you plan to run larger tires in the future 4.10

I run 35's Th350 and 4.10's, puts me around 2250 rpm at 55 mph

If you are considering a 700r4 in the future, 4.56s with 33 BFGs are working very well. We don't get on 65MPH or faster roads often though.

i guess the best question would be, what type of driving do you do? is it mostly city or mostly highway?
