Fuel Delivery???
« on: December 04, 2015, 10:14:14 am »
I've got an 84 K-10 350. About 6 months ago, I changed the entire distributor, cap, rotor, plugs, and wires. 3 weeks ago I got the carburetor rebuild. Well, this past Tuesday I had a 5 hour drive to make, made it about an hour and a half and the truck bogged down on me and shut off while accelerating. It felt kind of like it ran out of gas, but it started right back up. Changed the fuel pump, made the 5 hour drive, and when I get home it does it again. Bogged down and shut off. I don't have a clue what else to do. I've changed the fuel filter a million times. Could it be something with the carburetor?? I'm pretty sure I've fixed/replaced everything fuel delivery related except the tank.

Thanks in advance for any help

I would check timing, check for vacuum leaks, etc first.  Did you change the short sections of rubber hose at the fuel pump? Might also need to check/replace the ones on top of the fuel tank. Do you know when the 350 was installed? The truck would have originally been a 305 or 6 cyl, as no half tons had a factory 350 from 81-86 IIRC. A lot of these trucks are sold as having a 350, but in reality are just a 305. Potential for improper tuning of the carb is what I'm getting at here, assuming you didnt do the swap yourself.

-The 350 was installed about 10 years ago. Then the man that owned it died and his wife, who i bought it from, let it sit for about 8 years. She said she drove it once every month or two.
-I didn't change the short hoses at the fuel pump, but there's no gas leaking from them.
-I know nothing about carburetors. I took it off and put it on. The only tuning I did was adjust the idle set screws.

It's just crazy to me that it'll run fine(no rough idling or acceleration) for up to 5 hours (like it did yesterday) and then all of the sudden it craps out on me.

When it shuts down do you have spark?
What "New" distributor did you get?  Was there a problem with the original GM HEI?  Did you hang onto the original?

The Asian HEI distributors have less than stellar internals.  I've seen more serious electrical issues with these than they are worth.  Most of them do not use the stock pickup coil and reluctor and the "modern" Chinese equivalent is garbage.

If you have the old one you're usually far better off rebuild it.  It's not difficult and you don't usually have to tear it all the way down.
Make sure the steel advance pivot pins aren't worn out.  This is not the plastic bushings but the actual pins.  That's about the only real deal breaker for a DIY.  They can be repaired but require a skill set the average DIY doesn't have...
The AC Delco Professional series parts are a little more coin but they work and keep working.

$20 AC Delco D221 Module Pigtail with capacitor http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=532284
$34 AC Delco D1906 Professional Ignition Control Module http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php?catalog=301&partnum=D1906
$10 Moroso 26140 Distributor gear shim kit (measure end play before you buy)
$15 Moroso 72300 advance weight kit to replace rusty springs and missing pivot bushings.

Base rebuild $54-$79...

$25 Brass terminal cap and rotor set.  Unfortunately the Standard Motor Products DR318X & DR450X Blue Streak Brass Terminal Rotors are getting hard to find.  The MSD 5501 or the Accel 8123 brass terminal cap and rotor sets can be had for around $25.
You're at $105 now.

$60 ACDelco D504A Professional Ignition Coil HEI.  If you need one.  Accel coils and the cheap Asian crap have a rep for eating ignition modules.
If you do a Cap Rotor and quality coil you are at $165

$45 ACDelco D1907X Professional Ignition Distributor Pickup in the unlikely event it's failed (very unlikely)
$25 ACCEL 31035 HEI Adjustable Vacuum Advance Canister if the vacuum can has failed.  Again very unlikely.

Absolute worst case $235 for a fully rebuilt GM HEI distributor that should last another 40 years.

2-3 hours to clean and re-assemble.

Assuming it's not spark related...
How much fuel was in the tank when you bought it?
How much fuel is in the tank when she acts up?
Does it die consistently after you get down around 1/4 or 1/8 tank?  Rust pinholes on the bottom of the pickup tube might cause it to suck air after it gets about so low.

There is a fuel filter inside the carb, also check that your venting system for the gas tank is working correctly. charcoal canisters do fail and plug up the lines. the pickup could also be an issue. best way to find out if its fuel is put in a fuel pressure gauge in line and monitor it. HEI's like stated have known to fail if its spark.
