Truck Wont turn over
« on: December 16, 2015, 03:34:46 pm »
I need some advice/help. I recently bought a 1986 K5 blazer. When i got it someone had broken the turn signal/cruise control lever. Up on digging deeper into it to repair it i found the plastic canceling mechanism in the column was all broken as well. I went ahead and replaced it also. To change it out i had to lower the column down some. After getting it all put back together i turn the key and nothing happens. No click or lights or anything come on on the dash. If i turn the headlights on they work fine but thats it. Any ideas what might be the problem? I have looked at the connections down the column and they all appear to be plugged in as they should. Thanks in advance.

Sure sounds like the ignition switch came unplugged.

Is the push-rod from the ignition tumbler to the switch attached at both ends?

Yes both ends of the rod are still hooked up. From all i can tell all the connectors i can see are still plugged in.

Unlike Jeeps, trucks aren't meant to turn over, your tires should always be facing something solid :D  Sorry I had too. On to the real issue

It sound like wires in the column came loose, does anything on the column work? try your emergency flashers, they should come on regardless of the ignition, then try your turn signals, they should only come on when the key is in the on position.

Also check the obvious, did it blow any fuses

No everything in the column acts as though it is dead.

Now it is time to start check the mechanism from the key down....check to see if the rod under the ignition switch slipped out of place.

You could get a 12 v. tester and just start testing connections from the column down.

If not even the emergency flashers will turn on, I would check the long connector at the bottom of the column,

There's a long connector just behind the bolts that hold the column up, make sure it's all plugged together

Check the fusible links at the starter and firewall junction block by giving each a gentle tug to see if one stretches or pulls apart.

The column mounted ignition switch has one blue (or white) and one black harness connector that plugs into it.  The plastic connectors are made such that black has to be plugged in before blue (or white).  If both connectors are correctly plugged in and fully seated, verify that the actuator rod is properly engaged with the switch and actually moves in time with the key.  Assuming the rod functions as it should, check the switch adjustment and make sure both retaining screws are tight.

Thank you that gives me some good things to look for. I had that long connector unplugged that was in the pic above this post because it is hooked to the plastic canceling piece in the upper column. Maybe i didnt gett hat all plugged back in correctly. I sure hope.
