Where did the tranny fluid go?
« on: December 27, 2015, 06:52:40 am »
A few months back i did a tranny kit, and added new fluid of course, and after like 9 qts i finally got a normal reading. Anyway, just happen to check the other day and it looked a quart low! I have never seen one drop of the red stuff on the ground and there is no sign of leakage-like a trail of oil streaks going down the under carriage as if coming out while driving.

Theoretically, some can get sucked through a torn modulator and ingested by the engine.

Also, some could get pumped into the radiator via a cracked internal cooler, but I think you'd notice other issues.

Top it off a roll, keep an eye on it. Check your oil and rad for signs of trans fluid.
If it's a 4x4 it could migrate to the transfer case and eventually overfill.

Did you check it under the same conditions? Fluid warm, in park, level ground, after cycling through all the gears?

I wouldn't worry unless it needs another quart shortly.

fluid being drawn through the modulator is a very real possibility. One of the smaller trucks in my dad's tree service "fleet", a 73 f350 dump truck, trashed the valve seals and rings, and transmission, due to this problem over a prolonged period of time. Keep a close eye on it. If the fluid level continues to drop, be sure to check the vacuum line to the modulator for signs of fluid, or replace the modulator outright.
