Delay Wiper Upgrade

I have an '86 C10 with the standard two speed wipers.  I bought the delay module and am ordering the new stalk.  Does anyone know if the wiring inside the steering column also needs to change to add the delay function?  If the two speed wiring the same?  I appreciate any insight from others who have been there before.

I'm interested to see what people have to say. Just recently my wipers decided not to turn off anymore. They go through every speed except off, it's kind of annoying. Wish I could help Fred!

Wow, that would be annoying.  I found a column in the junk yard, but don't know if I really need it or not.  I just grabbed the delay module, but am thinking that I may also need additional wiring that my two speed column might not have.  If so, I need to get it before someone else grabs it.  I'm sure someone has done this modification before and knows the answer.

Hatzie and a few others should be able to verify this, but I believe the cab harness is the same.  IIRC, you will need the module and the appropriate column switch.

JasonD45, there is a two-wire connector and three-wire connector plugged into the wiper motor.  If you unplug the two-wire connector does the wiper motor stop?

You have the stalk and delay module.  You still need the column mounted pulse/delay wiper switch.  It includes an integrated wiper wiring pigtail that runs down the column.  A delay switch has three more wires than the 2 speed switch to control the delay module.  Nothing in the cab harness has to change it's all on the column.  The cab harness will plug right into the delay module or the 2 speed switch from 1985-1991.

1985-1986 CK series and 1987-1991 RV series need the column delay switch, delay module, and delay stalk all in the column.

I've never seen a 1984.  The wiring diagrams show the 1978-1983 delay wiring but I've read about column mounted switches in 1984 too so it depends on what you have.

1978-1983 need the twisty knob delay dash switch and delay module.  Harder to find the parts but again cheap and easy.

1973-1977 not cheap or easy.  Need to replace wiper motor with 1978-1983 unit, add a park function wire to the harness and, change the switch connector in the cab... and probably a few other non-trivial things I've forgotten.

I haven't had time to look at it, it started after a big snow storm, so I'm hoping for decent weather. I think it's something in the switch, because it goes through all the delays, slow and fast, just won't shut off. Hopefully this weekend brings some 40 degree weather I can get out and look at it a bit

If you need any assistance with it you should start a new thread and post the vehicle's particulars - year/model and whether it has intermittent wipers.

It appears that Standard Motor Products thinks the column mounted wipers started in 1984...

Thanks Hatzie.  If I understand correctly, I might need to grab that other steering column in order to get the extra wiring.  The stalk itself was broken off, but I can get that easily enough.  The link to Rock Auto looks like the actual switch you described.  Is that easy to install and fish the wires through, or is it easier to swap the whole column?

If the stalk is broken off then the switch may not be in usable condition.  The mating part is plastic...
It's not difficult to pull the pigtail in.  I usually cut off the old switch pigtail and use it to pull the new one through.

Believe it or not the tilt column switch is less expensive than non tilt.
