Auxiliary transmission
« on: February 01, 2016, 06:09:52 pm »
Does anyone know if there is an auxiliary transmission that I could put between my sm 465 (L123) and the divorced new process transfer case. It's in an '85 K10 with a small block.

A Ranger Overdrive goes between the bell housing and SM465

I was just hopping to find something that I could put in with out having to relocate the motor or the transmissions. However, I am considering one of those.
Thanks

If you have a divorced t case any Trans should work

Never seen a K 10 with a divorced tcase though
Is it a crew cab ?

How much space you got between the tail of the Trans and the tcase ?

The NV 3500 is good if you don't do a lot of towing and will bolt up to a non divorced NP  208 if the 208 has the 6 bolt round pattern
Otherwise a NV4500 is a good one

The spacer is 8.75 inches long. And it is the 208.
I would post a picture but I don't know how to do that on a phone. When I hit the button it just inserts img/img and doesn't give any options.

That's not divorced, divorced would have a short(6 to 10 inch) driveshaft, that is just a regular 465 and 208.

Honestly a NV4500 is just as cheap figuring in all driveshaft work and the cost of the overdrive unit.

I think that's the 6 bolt round pattern on the 208

The NV 3500 from a 97-07 Silverado should bolt right up
The 3500 has a 32 spline input

Your 208 should have a 32 spline
Output shaft
To use the 3500 you'll need a 208 with a 32 spline input which came behind TH-400 transmissions and should be behind your 4 speed but you won't know for sure till you pull it apart

I've swapped the NV 3550 into my 74 Bronco
It's the same Trans just used in Jeeps and Dodges with a removable bell housing

And I swapped a NV3500 from a 07 Silverado into our 76 K-10 using a NP-208 from a TH-400

The NV 3500 from any 97-07 Silverado will work
The ones from the S-10s will not

The 5 speeds from the older pickups will work but they are not as reliable

What's your goal with the Trans swap ?

A ranger od unit doesnt require moving the engine, and allows for a more flexible gearing option. The torque capacity is based on a 20,000 lb gvrw, so ultimately, most pickups will never exceed their limits, and unlike the gv unit, it works in 4wd as well. The rear driveshaft gets shortened about 7-8 inches, and the front lengthened the same. The crossmember moves back about the same, which is quite easily done. This is the route I would take over an nv4500/3500 swap.

We have a lot of steep windy roads. I like the 465 I have, but the gears are just so tall that once you get over about 4 or 5 thousand pounds in a trailer that already is around 1500 to 1800 pounds. It makes it hard to keep some decent momentum to keep up with that 10 yard truck that's eating your tailpipe.

Sounds to me your issue may be that 305 and the fact you're over the GCVW  based on the differential gearing.

I just re=read and realized you have a 361 now...  still more likely is the gearing or cam choice for the torque needed at the RPM pulling hills

all the unit will do is give you .75 ratio. so even if you turn it on in 3rd gear (1.70) your gear will only be 1.27. i dont know if this will help you out or not. if 1:1 isnt enough i really dont see how 1.27 will be any better. you have a k10 so you prob have higher gears maybe 3.08. getting a set of 3/4 axles might be a better bet and cheaper. you then might have 4.10 or 3.73, granted you will need 8 lug wheels if you find 15" 8 lugs all you have to do is a little grinding and the wheels will fit
