Power Steering Pump Alignment
« on: February 17, 2016, 12:42:56 pm »
I can not see any way to fix my misaligned power steering pump.
The bracket that mounts to the water pump seems to be causing this and does not look to be bent.
Wrong bracket?

Maybe if the bracket isn't bent, maybe it needs to be bent in the direction to straighten that belt out.

That's an option however it is really heavy duty and going to take some serious force to tweak it.

Align your line of sight with the front or rear plane of the pulley face.  Does the inside of the bracket need to move rearward, or does the outside of the bracket need to move forward, or___________?  Is it missing the rear support that anchors the outside of the pump to the exhaust manifold stud (image)?  I would avoid bending brackets unless there is no alternative, since it almost always introduces new alignment issues.  Can you post additional pics of the bracket mounting to the block, etc?

It is the inboard bracket that attaches to the water pump causing the problem which has no adjustment.
The alignment is off with the outboard belt tension bracket disconnected.
Looking from top down the pump needs to be rotated clockwise.
My setup is exactly like the top one pictured in your image.

Looking at it from your picture, it appeared as the side of the pulley closest to the block needs to go towards the firewall, which would in turn bring the side of the pulley closest to the fender out towards the radiator. Which is the same as looking from the top down and rotating clockwise on a vertical axis.

Lets see a picture of the rear bracket.

When I remove the bolt on the tensioning bracket and loosen the long bolt through the water pump bracket this is how the pump wants to sit. No reasonable amount of prying between the bracket mounted to the exhaust manifold and head and the slot bracket on the pump will work.
I know it looks like add a spacer / stacked washers but that will not work plus notice in the first picture above how close the power steering and alternator belts are.

You may not have a matched pump to bracket, they are not all the same.
When I replaced my pump in my 74 K5 the replacement pump and reservoir did not fit the bracket properly.
After getting the correct pump all fit fine.
The differences are subtle but exist.
Just a thought.

I ran into this same issue... And I simply just used a lot of spacers aka washers to get it lined up properly.

I think that is it!
Unfortunately I returned the original pump for the core.
The pump wants to sit closer to the engine with a spacer between the manifold / head bracket and the slotted bracket on the pump.

I just tried adding a spacer between the fixed manifold / head bracket and the slotted bracket on the pump and it is close but now the belts touch.

Thank you.

I tried a stack of washers moments ago even though I could see it would cause the belts to touch.

I think I have the wrong pump as blazer74 suggested.

Thank you for your help!

I thought I had a picture of what mine looked like but it looks almost like the shaft is too long on that pump.

You are right. If the pulley was set back a little I could make it work.
I rented a tool to remove and replace the original pulley I know it is seated fully but maybe the shaft on this pump is too long.

You guys are GREAT!!!!!!

Thank you all!
