New Guy from Texas: 82 Silverado
« on: February 18, 2016, 02:24:09 pm »
;D Happy to have found this forum, seems like a wealth of information! This truck was bought new by a family friend and my grandfather got it from him in the mid 90s. He passed away in 2011 and left it to me. Since then it has been drivin some on the side here and there but not too much. My daily (70 VW Westfalia) was totaled in early January so this has become my daily now.. Sad ordeal but glad to finally give the ole truck some attention.

Luckily my grandfather kept every receipt so I have a neat little record of the truck. I found out it was resprayed the stock two-tone around 2001 but other than that I believe it's fairly original. I just tackled the manifold leak cause it had a blown gasket.. checked all the fluids... changed flashers (although left blinker still acting up). Now going to replace the rear cracked tail light and some misc items on the truck. I have read around the site and saw there are some good parts here, but anyone have a recommendation of where to get parts, or not get parts for that matter? I'm a VW guy so this is a little new to me... was looking to replace my cracked rear taillight with this:

Welcome from Northeastern AZ! Wow! Nice truck! My dad had an 82 with a similar story to yours. He bought it brand new and I grew up with it all my life! Through a tragic turn of events that involves another truck, I no longer have the 82. I wish everyday that I did! There's lots of great advice and friendly members here who are great and more than willing to lend a helping hand!

Edit: You'll be perfectly fine with that taillight as that is the complete replacement assembly. That includes lens with chrome trim to match your Silverado décor, and the silver bulb backing plate that should also include a new lens gasket. You should probably replace both sides at the same time so they look and function the same.

Welcome from GA. I can tell you to stay away from rubber replacement window seals from a specific "extended" Motor Company.. Other than that, nice truck.
