Power window trouble...

Well, I dont know if this has been covered or not(if it has, I was not able to find it), but my cousin just bought an 83 Chevy C-10 Silverado, and the driver side window refuses to roll down. Now, this wouldnt normally be too bad of a problem, but he has a solid back glass and the weather has been in excess of 100*F here lately.

We started to try to atleast remove the motor so that he could atleast have the window down, but after looking over the children's manual, we found it to be VERY vague:rolleyes

I tried searching through a search engine, and only found something on a site where a guy was asking how to replace it on an 88 van. The tech guy replied with horror stories of how his buddy nearly got his hand chopped off or something.

So, Im sure not everybody takes their truck in to a mechanic to have this fixed. Surely somebody knows how to do it, or maybe we might be lucky enough that somebody knows of a write-up on how to fix it?

Your help would be so greatly appreciated!

The window has to be down in order to remove the regulator arms from the channel on the bottom of the glass. There are four bolts that hold the motor/regulator assembly to the door. You could unbolt these and unbolt the rear track and see if you could get enough space to unbolt the motor from the regulator. The motor is attached to the regulator with three bolts, but getting to them inside the door is going to be tricky. If you can get these bolts off this is where you could possibly loose a finger or two. Once you pull the motor off, the glass is going to fall. I would use some duct tape and tape the window to the top of the door to try and prevent injury.
I personally wouldn't waste the time trying this method. I would simply bust the glass and replace it when I replaced the motor. Any glass (blazer, truck, suburban) will fit as long as it's from an 81 or newer. 1980 and older the glass was thicker and will not fit the weatherstripping inside the door tracks.You should be able to find a glass anywhere pretty cheap.
This is just my experience I don't really know of an easier way without breaking the window, but maybe someone else does and will tell you what they did. Good luck

my drivers motor puked out with the window up, this isnt my pride and joy and i was in a hurry so i just cut a 5x6" hole where the motors located at the bottom of the door( previous owner already started a hole for a speaker b4 they found the regulater behind it) and put a self taping screw the the sector gear to keep it inplace b4 i took motor off. changed motor covered my lil hole with sheet metal n put my carpet panel back on... totally not the way to do it but it didnt involve any swearing or missing fingers and it only took 20 mins

BREAK the Glass!  Your kidding right?
Seriously, it isn't that hard.  roll the window down all the way and pull the window out of the vent channel and push it forward.  There is a groove/slot in the window, roll the glass t his slit and pull one end out of the glass.  Tilt the glass down and roll the window up some and the other side will drop out.  With the window pointing down roll it back up and pull it back out of the door.  The door panel needs to be removed of course.

I know how to take them out if you can roll the regulator up and down but if the power motor don't work what do you do then? So no I wasn't kidding that's how I would do it.

If it was stuck up (which would be easier), I would remove the regulator from the door and then reach in and remove the window motor from the track and let it down.  It would probably make it easier to loosen/remove the rear track to let it drop down, but not necessary.  Once the motor is off, it will go down.

I just replaced my drivers side power window motor yesterday. It was a simple repair.

1 remove door panel
2 remove bar on upper left corner of door (two bolts)
3 remove door handle rod
4 unbolt the regulator from door (2 bolts/ 2 nuts)
5 disconnect wire harness from the motor
6 slide regulator from window track and out through the
  upper left side of door
7 secure the regulator arms by drilling a hole through both
  arms and put a olt throught the holes or stand on it like
  I did  (this is the part that will cut your fingers off so I
  reccomend the safest way to hold the arms in place)
8 remove the 4 small bolts that hold the motor to the regulator
9 to install reverse the steps.

this took me about an hour......be cafefull with the regulator it is spring loaded and could change the way you pick your nose!!!!:rollin
