Frame
« on: July 25, 2005, 09:20:00 pm »
HI Everyone.

I Have a 86 2500 two wheel drive with a good frame.
I also have a 87 2500 4x4 that has good drive train but body and frame rusted.  I'd like to swap out the drive train and make the 2wheel a 4x4.
Seem's like the spring perches in the rear just need's to be swapped, But the coil front end and leaf spring swap is bugging me. Are the two frame's the same ?   Has anyone ever done this mod before ?  Like to get as much info as I can before I start.

THank's for any help

You are correct about the rear perches, the frames are the same but its alot of work. might be better to find an already stipped 4x4 frame.

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

Only the frame rails themselves are the same and the rear cab cross support.  Everything else is different.  You will end up swapping almost every piece to the 4x2 frame.

Thank You.
I was hoping I could use it, Since it was undercoated and in good condition.
The 4x4 frame look's like a dirt road washed out after a rain storm. and would last a couple of season's with some care and I drove it like a ford.
I guess I'll have to look into both prospect's. Since I am at that point with them anyhow and if I cut the rivet's I can rust proof a lot better
Are there any referance point's on the frame for the new mounting point's ?   I see a lot of 1/16 holes are these for the 4x4 option but not drillled out?

Thank's again
This is a great board and I'm sure I'll be back with more question's

nah lol my 73 was bare metal for years and it was so thick that the rust couldnt go any further.  it dont matter if its painted that much, it will last forever as long as there isnt salt or something caked on it, or you want it to look really good.  the only bad spot i can think of would be the steering box mount that is a common cracking point...
