Speedometer Problem

My speedometer stopped working a few months ago. I have it out now, but don't understand exactly what's wrong. I was expecting the cable to be broken, but it spins just fine while driving down the road. It appears that whatever the part is inside the speedometer that holds the cable, is wallowed out so that the cable just spins freely inside and doesn't actually spin the magnet like its supposed to.

So what is the fix for this? New speedometer? Rebuild it?

If input on the speedo is wallowed out, your best bet is to replace it unless you feel like tearing it apart to replace the input all together. The only reason to do that is if you need to keep exact mileage, or if you have a rare speedo.

When you turn the input, does it actually make the speedo work? That'd eliminate a magnet issue.

Yes, when I turn the input it works just fine. The bearing looks good. The shaft is tight inside the housing and spins with no play at all. I can't tell if the inside is wallowed out or if the end of the cable is rounded. Which one is more likely? The cable end doesn't really look that bad, its just so small that it doesn't engage with the input.

If I could get some type of metal sleeve to go over the end of the cable (like a metal aglet that goes on a shoelace), and shove that into the input, I think that would solve my problem.

On my speedos, I can shine a flashlight inside the input and see nice, squared off edges that the speedo cable inserts into. I never looked at my speedo cable.
You could likely add something like that to make it tighter, assuming it's not totally rounded out.
