tbi to carb ???
« on: March 21, 2016, 01:37:35 pm »
Hi everybody,
I have a question and ive tried searching and couldn't find the answers i was looking for. My 76 K10 had a goodwrench 350 in it when i bought it, and it had a spun bearing so i decided to rebuild it. During rebuild, i found a few cracks in the block so its time for a new motor. I have another block that needs a little bit of work, so i decided to build a 383 stroker. In the mean time i need a motor for my truck, and i have a buddy that has a 1992 z71 that was wrecked in the side but the motor still runs like a top. He said i can get the motor for a great price, but i would rather not go through the hassle of having to change out all the wiring to have to go back.

So my question is, all i need to convert the TBI to Carb is to just put the carb, intake, and the HEI distributor off the old motor onto the new motor correct? Im thinking thats it, i just wanted to get a little bit of reassurance before i jumped into it. Any help would be great.

Thanks
Charlie

i'm curious too and my questions in general are:

1) Can you use a "regular" distributor/distributor gear in a roller lifter engine?   Does the distributor gear need to be "melonized?"

2) The intake may not work or some of the bolt holes might need to be modified.  But even if it doesn't work, not a big deal as you can get a manifold that will work.

3) This engine may not have the fuel pump pushrod hole drilled and the cam may not have a lobe to drive the pushrod.   Not a big deal though to use an electric fuel pump.
There is a jig available to drill a hole, but i think it was like $600 or something.

I might be m8staken and thats why im azking, but i dont think you need a different manifold unless your going to a vortec engine... but like i said im not 100% sure on that. And from what ive read the distributor would work, but changing the gear to a bronze gear is suggested. I was already thinking about the fuel pump issue, but if i have to run an electric pump i will.

So yes the intake on a (L05 350) is different then earlier intakes. The bolt holes on a standard sbc intake can be modified to work. And a Vortec (96-99) intake is different then both of the other ones.

If the block doesn't have the hole for the mech. fuel pump. You need to run an electric pump. Since my truck came stock with Tbi. I'm running the stock in tank pumps with a fuel pressure regulator up by the carb.

With the distributor gear. If the motor has a roller cam your supposed to use a melonized or bronze gear. Can you get away without it, Maybe. But it's pretty cheap just to buy the right gear and have one less thing to worry about. Other then that a standard Hei will work just fine.

It's been done but I wouldn't recommend that. They are at a different angle and the gaskets don't fit correctly.
