Have been a Chevy person since about 1963. Owned many Chevy trucks over those years.
Recently purchased this 85 Chevy C20 with a Mobile Canteen body. Truck ran very well when I bought it. Started right up with a coupla pumps on the accelerator (Choke was not reconnected because the choke on the new engine is way different from the old one.)
Gave 2500.00 for it. Had a new engine and I had the cab painted for 350.00.
The canteen body needs a good bit of work, most of which I have already done.
The truck has major electrical issues:
Dashboard lights don't work. I ordered a new headlight switch for it. I am not certain it is the switch but it is cheap to buy (under 20.00 on the eVilbay) and easy to replace. So I figured I eliminate that first. Then wade into the wiring. (Yes I have checked bulbs.)
Fuel gauge doesn't work. Start the truck and the needle goes all the way to the full end. (actually off the scale). I think the tank was replaced some time ago and I suspect connections. When I pulled the the gauge I was able to move the needle with my finger. I thnk I can get a gauge for about 40.00 bucks and it is easy enough to change that I might just try that.
Oil pressure gauge doesn't work. As I said, the engine was replaced just recently. I am not certain that the mechanic reconnected the sending unit for the gauge. As well, the replaced engine might have just a switch rather than a pressure sender. Haven't got that far into it yet.
Turn signal flasher on the dash board doesn't light for the right turn signal. (Exterior lights work but just no indication in the cab of the truck.) And the turn signal switch does not turn off when the steering wheel is returned to its center position after a turn. Turn signal switches are not that expensive and not hard to swap out except pulling the steering wheel. I think I might have a puller for that. Have to check.
Right now the truck has a short someplace that is draining the battery. It charges when it is running. I replaced the battery (which promptly went completely dead) But I am going to take it to a mechanic to try to find that short.
I am looking forward to getting this truck going.
