Cannot remove front shocks

So I'm halfway through my shock replacement on the truck and have run into a problem removing the front shocks.  I removed the nut from the top and the bottom nut/bolt, but I can't get the old shock to budge.  How does the shock separate from the top mount?  There's no bolt head to put a socket on like there is for the top of the rear shocks.  Any help would be great!  Thanks.

about a 3 lb. sledge will persuade it to move

I know that would help, but I'm more concerned about why the shock mount looks like this and how to get it off.  The first pic is the way it's been riding all this time, and the second pic is after I hammered the shock all the way onto the stud mount.  That's about an inch or so of movement, which I don't think is normal.

Never mind.  I just wiggled the top stud and it came out.  I thought the hole was threaded.  DOH!!!
