Finding an owner??

Hi all, not sure how appropriate this is; but I want to find out the owner of a 70's chevy truck, it has been parked in a field next to a house for several years, haven't really seen it move. So today, I figured, why not, I'll stop and inquire about it. Anyways, the lady was rude and kept telling me to leave(she had every right too, but the way she did it was rude), but from what little she did say in between saying "get out", she is just a renter, and said she doesn't give out personal information. Which again is fine, I'm a stranger, but she wouldn't even let me ask if I could give her MY information to pass on...anyways, I figure stuff like that has to be public record right?

Should I hit the town hall and figure out who owns it?
And how helpful will that be?
Would I be able to get in contact with said owner with that information?

I don't want to see the truck sit any longer, considering about 6 years ago it was very clean looking, a little rust here and there, this I know because it was at a used car dealership and I had looked at it, it was very easy to recognize when I saw it 4 years back, but at that time it was in the driveway. 2 years ago I noticed it hadn't moved. So that's the story, and I just want to find the owner to see if I can buy it.

Do you have the VIN?  Are there expired license plates?  You maybe able to inquire through the state with a few pieces of information but it's not necessarily public information.

The town should have the present property owners name but that's about it.

No VIN, and it's in the tall grass so I can't quite make out the plates(but definitely expired, inspection sticker color looks a few years old at least) I don't want to snoop anymore, should the lady call the cops.

If I can get the property owners name, a phone book should tell me the rest unless he/she is an unlisted. I feel weird about doing this, but the last time I let a car sit, I saw it in the crusher.

If you use an online search of the county's assessors, or tax office, many have  the ability to search land owners names and mailing addresses. You will need the exact address and zip though to get started.

this would be the easiest and best solution. if you can find out who owns the property you can talk to them and ask them. even if you looked up the "owner" of the truck it will only be whos name was last on the title. who knows if someone still has the title but never transferred it and the original owner is passed on now.

Most property records are held at the county level. Look for your county's assessor, appraisal or recorder office online. To find the owner of a property, enter the property's address or Assessor's Parcel Number (APN) in the property search section of the website.

I would send a letter addressed to the "property owner" or landlord" to the house where the truck is parked.  Hopefully the tennant forwards the letter to the owner.
  I wouldn't go to the town hall and get them involved. 
  Here in Massachussets if you have a vehicle on your property, the state wants $$ out of the deal.  Along with sales tax, titles, and registration fees, we have an excise tax.  The excise tax is basicly a road use tax, but technically you also have to pay it if the vehicle is not registered.
  Many town here in Massachussets do not allow unregistered vehicles on your property.  This is usually only enforced if there is a complaint.  I would hate to see someone inquiring about an old truck cause problems for the owner.

Where we are you can go to the county agriculture agent and buy what's called a plat (sp?) map. It shows the property layout with the owners name on it.
