Help me say goodbye to this carb

Guys,

I have the carb almost off my 85 Chevy.  It's obviously been there for over 30 years!  Just one bit of linkage still connected.  I've shown two pics, one I shined a light right onto the connection.  I don't see any retainer pins or feel any behind the connection.  Does this just pop off with some force?  I've pulled a bit but not to hard.  Last thing I want to do is break something!

i think that's the trans kickdown cable;  you grab the throttle arm with one hand so it doesn't move  and with the other hand push the black clip forward (towards the front of the truck) and it should come off.

BTW, do not throw away or trade this carb in as a core;  You may need it in the future and it's just easier to have the original carb with original calibration etc.   Even if you have to pay a core charge it's worth it to keep it IMO.

Thank you, came right off when I slid it forward. 

The place I'm getting the new carb didn't charge a core charge, but you kinda "promise" to send your core in when you choose returning core (no charge) versus no return, $98.   I guess they could come after my credit card.  Is it worth keeping for that much?

Yes, i think it is definitely worth it. 

If you got the carb from a generic rebuilder then the carb MAY or MAY NOT run right or it MAY run "ok."

The best way is to rebuild the one you got.  i can understand not having the time or inclination to rebuild it now though.  But by holding on to it, you'll be able to at least refer back to it as far as calibration specs.

Plus a lot of remans aren't put together very well---mismatching parts etc.

Thanks for the info.  Yes I'm aware of not so good reman's out there.  This one is coming with a lifetime warranty so it sounds like they stand behind their work.  I'm crossing my fingers, it will be here tomorrow and I'll be sticking it on the truck.  Mine was shot.  The truck would start and run but not idle worth a crap.

most times with the "refund" on the core they can go back and charge your card. it might be in small print on their website but they probably have something to cover their butts

Best thing I did was say GOODBYE to a Holley Carb!  I had 2 of them on a Dodge Charger with a 440 years ago and they were junk then too!

could always go to a junkyard and pull any quad and turn that in as a core. might have to pay $20 but if youre that attached to your stock carb its a better option than paying the 100

I'm not attached to the carb I removed at all, its just everyone is saying to keep it.  That's a great idea paying for one at a junk yard though.

i'm not saying hold on to it for sentimental reasons;  A lot of these reman carbs are not put together very well----throttle plates not lined up and can hang up, wrong base plates, wrong calibrations etc.

The factory carb is generally best for each individual application.   Rebuilding yours would be best, but again i can certainly understand not having time to do it properly right now.


i can understand why they, the carb rebuilders do it that way from a business standpoint----most cars don't have carbs anymore so they have to batch together applications that can run ok on one general calibration.   It wouldn't be cost-effective to remanufacture a carb to a specific application with a relatively small demand.

Now, not ALL rebuilders throw 'em together.   Some do just as good, if not better, than factory:
