Best rust converter?
« on: March 20, 2006, 04:26:00 pm »
I've got some surface rust areas on my 85 Silverado. I am sanding all the rust off that I can. Problem is some of the areas are pitted. What is the best rust converter to use before I paint? I have used por-15 before but didn't have the vehicle long enough to know how long it lasted. I searched and found a product called rust bullet thats supposed to be better than por-15. I've also used the permatex brand in the spray bomb. Anybody know what'd be the best and most economical? I just don't want the rust to come back right after I fix it. Thanks:)

I would say POR 15 is your best bet. You need to top coat it right away though.

Up here in the eskimo land,I use Rust Check (rattle can) to turn the rust into black oxide. Then sand most of it off, leaving it in the pits.Use a nice epoxy primer over that.  My 2 cents.
Always follow your gut instincts and pick something you think sounds reasonable.I would do as Craig said and search for rust removers and rust convertors.

Permatex has one called Extend that I have used. It too coverts the rust to iron oxide. It seemed to work well, I used it on a dimond plate flat bed. I top coated it with acrylic enamal and it held up well.
