Trans. fluid change w/?
« on: September 14, 2016, 10:19:24 am »
Have about 85,000 on a 700r4 transmission. Seams like it hesitates longer now then it once did, going from forward to reverse and vice versa. I give it all the time it needs to make the shift as not to bang in gear. All forward gears shift just fine, on time, w/no hesitation. The plan is to change filter and fluid.

I probably read into this too much, anyway, looking for thoughts or recommendations on adding Lucas and or certain Dextron fluids.

Do not add any additional additives to the transmission fluid. If you have put 85,000 miles on it with never having done a service, you are over due by 35,000 miles. GM recommends doing a service every 50,000 miles. You may need to adjust your intervals based on use tho and driving conditions. Get a quality transmission filter, best to use an AC Delco filter and use Dexron VI (6) automatic transmission fluid. Be sure to cleaned the pan when you do the service, add a magnet to the inside bottom of the pan if it doesn't have one and never use RTV or other types of sealants, use a gasket only when putting the pan on. DO NOT over torque the pan bolts, if it is factory and has a steel pan with 13mm (1/2 inch) pan bolts, torque to no more than 100 INCH pounds.

As stated above, right on the money. I just sold my hot rod that had a 700r4 in it. As much as I loved the OD to keep the RPMs down, I hated the way it shifted, no matter how we adjusted the cable, either too early or too late. Always try to use AC Delco parts if you can find them, and are reasonably priced. Good luck and keep us posted bud
