1981 K30 fuel tank switch issues

I've been having issues with switching the tanks on my 81 k30.  Any of you guys ever bypass the whole system and just drop a tank in the bed that feeds the line to the pump?  If so, can you share some details of how you did it?  Thanks in advance!
