I looked but couldn't find any posts on what to use to clean the black backing on the instrument gauges when the lens is removed. What would be the best way to clean them? Thanks

In the absence of other replies, I'll chime in.
Use a only a very soft DRY paintbrush or q-tips with NO solvent to gently brush the dust off your gauge. Even water can smear the delicate text on the face depending upon their age. I learned this lesson the hard way.

Lye or Trisodium Phosphate
I'm kidding
I'd use a BARELY damp microfiber cloth with the extremely light pressure. Take your time.. as others have mentioned, from years of sun baking and UV damage, the paint on the gauges tends to rub off easily.

I cleaned them with a good ol can of air and a real fine paint brush until my white cover overs come in
