Swapping Upper Control Arms - 82 C10
« on: November 10, 2016, 05:12:29 am »
This is probably a dumb question but I figured I would ask anyways.

I have an 82 C10 that we just rebuilt replaced the ball joints and bushings on as well as installed new coil springs.

It is a long story but we managed to get the upper control arms on the wrong sides. Driver on passenger and passenger on driver. (The result of being in a hurry and working late into the night). I know........dumb move.

I was curious if I could simply lower the truck down completely on a 6x6 under each lower control arm so the coil springs are compressed and then simply unbolt the upper control arms and swap to the correct side. Since the upper ball joint goes down through the upper control arm and the coil spring does not touch the upper control arm I was thinking this may work. (I have the motor/trans/front clip/etc. all back on the truck so there should be plenty of weight pushing down on the front suspension.

I was looking to see what you guys thought on this or do I need to compress/remove the coil springs as well?

I thought there was only upper/lower controls arms not LH/upper and RH/upper, when I was looking to order from Rock auto so I could swap mine out there was no designation for ordering LH/RH only upper and lower.

They are definitely different. They hit the top of the spindle in the back when on the wrong side and the hole to mount the brake line clamp is only on one side of the control arm in the front.
