Stop light switch
«

I recently purchased a '79 that had been sitting at a body shop for the past few years so I dont know its history. Upon getting it home, I was told the brake lights were not turning on and after some troubleshooting, noticed there was no stop light switch under the dash. It looks like they may have taken out the steering column and in the process removed the stop light switch along with the assembly that depresses the switch when the brake is depressed.
I bought another switch and now the brake lights turn on when the switch is pressed in by hand. The issue I have is i do not have the bracket or metal piece that attaches to the brake pedal that will depress the switch when the switch is mounted to its bracket and you step on the brake pedal. I have checked most of the parts magazines and cannot locate the piece i am looking for. I also checked some local wrecking yards and still cannot find the needed part.
Any suggestions/recommendations to help narrow my search would be appreciated!

Wrecking yard is your only option.

dont know if it matters and if i remember correctly the brake lights shouldnt turn on when the switch is depressed but when released. if they turn on when compressed then thats for the cruise control??? maybe

you are right, the brake lights were on when i connected the switch and checked the rear of the truck, not when i pressed in the switch. I guess i was confusing the pressing of the brake pedal with the pressing in of the switch. pressing the pedal = releasing the switch.

Correct, there is no tab. The bolt is there, but the tab is missing.

Hi 1967Kaiser, I appreciate the offer but hopefully I have a solution now.
Today, I found a used brake pedal on ebay for a 73-79 chevy truck which had the tab on it. It says it is for a manual transmission, so I assume there is a difference between auto and manual since it stated it is for a manual and you asked if I had an automatic (which I have). Even if it doesn't install perfectly, I think I can tweak it in order to get it to work, this would be easier for me vs. trying to fabricate a part.
Once again, I really appreciated the offer as well as all the previous responses.
