I think I got a 305 instead of a 350 😕
« on: December 13, 2016, 09:35:38 pm »
I keep trying to figure out exactly what motor I've got. The guy I bought it from kept saying it was a 350. I can't find where it says 5.0 or 5.7. Only thing I've seen is 627 on the sides of the block. Which, from what I've been finding on Google, means it's a 305. Kinda bummed XD

if that number is still there. if the block has been milled down it wont.

you have casting numbers on the back side of the drivers side on the block. you have to look straight down to see them. but this only what the block was casted for. if you look at the stamped numbers like zieg said that should tell you what it was made into

It's not the end of the world if it is  305:
Look what Frieby did with one:

Now IF it was represented as a 350 and is actually a 305, then that IS a problem because 350's do command higher prices than 305s.  And this problem should not be taken lightly.

A former friend sold me what was vehemently claimed to be a 355, but was actually a 283.  The thing did run ok though---i got it to turn 90 in the 1/4 mile.

I finally got the chance to come out and look at it. I guess it's a 305, which is kind of disappointing, but I swear it looks like 5.3 or 5.8, which I guess don't exist. Maybe the side of the 0 took a hit, I don't know, but you can clearly see humps in the sides of the digit...

Oh, as far as value goes, I only paid $1650 for it, so I guess it's not too bad

Yeah, but it works, correct?

So it will drive you around, be fairly reliable, and give you reasonable gas mileage.

And when you decide to swap in a 350, or a stroker 383 - you have all the parts off this motor to put on the next motor.  Yeah, a 350 is "better", but you realistically don't drive at full throttle all the time.  Even if you had a 350, you'd want a 383.  If you had a 383, you'd want a 454.  It never ends, really....

No worries man, fuggedaboutit.

Yeah, I'm not gonna nitrous my 305, lol. I may see what I can get with a better intake and exhaust headers, maybe a better cam.. I dunno

I dunno about yours but my 305 scoots around nicely. After finally sorting out my overheating issues I ran it 20 or so miles into town and I'm amazed at how fast and powerful this 305 is. I do have a 4bbl Edelbrock carb with riser plate, headers/dual exhaust and HEI. For all I know because I don't know the origin of the motor...it may have a performance cam in her(hopefully). Oh, and had the heads shaved and valves seated.

The only thing on mine I know for sure is that it has an Edelbrock carb and stock exhaust headers that are probably suffocating the engine XD That said, though, it will scoot around pretty good. It's definitely not like my car, but it's not horribly slow, lol
