1985 GMC C1500 Stock Carb

So a few months ago I got this 85 C1500. 350/700r4. The truck was running fine but the valve covers are leaking. So I start removing parts that are in the way and I notice an ear plug stuffed in the side of my carb... I have looked at schematics and can't figure out what the hole is for and what should go there. Would removing the ear plug hurt performance? I'm fairly new to automotive maintenance but am an aircraft mechanic by trade so a lot of practices and knowledge transfers over fine. Thanks in advance for the advice!

The choke mechanism has been removed.

Its been a while since I converted from hot air to electric choke; however, I remember that there was a port that needed to be plugged for the conversion.

If you have no choke mechanism/actuator, make sure the choke plate is wired open.  It will make it hard to start when cold, but at least you won't be running rich all the time.
