I'm currently switching from a turbo 400 to 700r4 on my '86 silverado and am wondering if i will be able to reuse the crossmember by modifying it or if i will have to get a different one.

If you are talking about the transmission crossmember, you can reuse it. They are the same. Just the position changes.

If you get the police / taxi package rear tail shaft housing for the 700R4 you don't need to move the crossmember.
