Horn not working
« on: April 29, 2020, 01:20:22 pm »
Hi all. I am having a problem getting the horn on my 1985 C20 to work. I have checked it out, and I believe the reason it doesn't work is because the steering column is not grounded. I have replaced the blinker switch the wiper switch in the column. With the new blinker switch, if i put a jumper on the horn button to ground the horn works fine. When I try the jumper to the steering shaft nothing. I can't seem to figure out what completes the circuit for the horn. I have all the parts for the horn, but when I put them together, no horn. Any one got any ideas for me to check.

Thanks

;D for those that may have this problem, there is a horn contact metal strip in the steering column that connect the outer steering jacket thru the upper bearing retainer. thus making the upper bearing a grounded circuit. The metal washer that sits below the bearing preload spring completes the ground to the upper steering column. I took it all apart and it was full of dirt grime and grease. Cleaned it all up and put everything back together and the horns are working again. WARNING: PITA..... if you can avoid taking the upper steering column apart, do it. You need much patience and three hands to get it done.......:)
