heads
« on: January 07, 2007, 03:29:00 pm »
I have a 79' chevy pickup with a 350. I replaced the header gaskets and they were square port gaskets. I bought some round port gasket and they seem to look more of the same size as the ports on the heads than the square port gaskets. my question is are my heads round or square port? They look like both. Is there such thing as oval ports? I hear most gen. 1 small-blocks chevys are round port. And also, the headers flanges look like they have an oval shape to them too. thanks,
mark

I am a little confused on what you are talking about.  Gen I and II SBC all have the same head design.  Intake ports are square and exhaust ports are "round".  The only exception to this is the D port Aluminum heads on the TPI motors.

BBC's have different style INTAKE ports which are Round, Oval and Square.  SBC have only one style intake ports, square.

there are 2 types of header gaskets at the auto stores I go to. Square port and round(perfect circles) port. My "exhaust" ports look like both, like if you were to put a square and circle together. I've tried both the square and round port header gaskets. the round port gaskets seem to match better than the square ones. The round port gaskets are pefectly circlular, but my exhaust ports are not perfect circles. so thats why I was asking if what style ports i have. So, most older smallblock chevs have round exhaust ports, right?
