Rear end going out?
« on: March 15, 2007, 11:26:00 pm »
I am kind of new to this site and there seems to be alot of knowledge here.

When I shift my truck into reverse, it will kind of "pop" before it will move.  Someone told me that this "jump" is from play between the splines of the output shaft of the trans and the plines on the inside of the yoke, and not to wory about it.

Another guy told me that it could be my rearend going out.  This seems more likely to me. Also, when driving between 50 and 60 mph there is a very slight vibration.

How could i check my rear end?  What should I look at to see how worn my rear end is?

Thanks for any suggestions

Jack it up with front wheels blocked very well.  Put trans in neutral and get up under the rear.  Turn the drive shaft with your hands and notice the play.  See where the noise is coming from.  It should be easy to diagnose where it is coming from.

My guess....ujoints on your driveshaft.
