th350 to sm465
« on: February 13, 2007, 12:59:00 pm »
i have a th350 in my 69 c10 and a sm465 out of my 77. what would it take to put the 4speed in to the 69 so i can put the auto in my 77 so i wont have to buy another tranny and it already has a shift kit installed. they are both longbeds so i guess the drive shafts will swap. my biggest concern is the clutch pedal assembly. will the assembly out of the 77 fit in to the 69 or will i have to do something else. and will the tranny hump out of the 77 fit the 69 floor pan. thanks for any help.

To swap the standard into the 69 you will need the clutch pedal assembly, the clutch linkage, the cross member, the floor center section, and rear drive shaft from a 67 through 72 long bed. Might be more but those are the big things.

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

so your sayin the driveshaft and clutch pedal assembly from the 77 wont work in the 69. if thats the case i might say the heck with it. might be more trouble than its worth.

I would check with some junkyards and see what you can find.  Maybe trade off the 4 speed that doesn't fit.  The SM420 was the old tranny, but anything 68 or later should be the 465.  Just have to see what will fit.  I have a hard time believing that there is not any way to make the 465 work.  Just go find the pedals and frame bracketry from a 72-earlier.  Then, just bolt it up, it just uses glorified all-thread to push the clutch fork.

ther eis a way but you will need parts for the right year/style of truck, everything changed in 73

but if you want to find out the hard way then good luck
420 was last in 67

465 was first in 68

this stuff all changed in 73, all of it

need a donor truck, all the parts

trade chassies with someone, or with a yard

most yards charge about 250 to 300 and you can strip a whole vehicle but cant keep both the body or the frame

only one or the other

good luck

oddly enough im thinking of doing a similar swap into my '73 C20 except i have the th400. of course i know about how hard it will be and all the parts that i'll need. i prefer standard shift over automatics just because of how fun they are to drive:D
