TH400 Output Shaft?
« on: April 04, 2007, 11:16:00 am »
I found an add for two turbo 400 trannys for 75 bucks a piece. I have been wanting to swap in a turbo 400 for my sm465, but my question is what all is involved in this swap? I'd assume that the crossmember mount would be the same, but doesn't the output shaft on the turbo 400 need to long in a 4x4 application? My pickup is 4x4, so i was wondering what all would be involved in this switch, i know the basics, mounting, cooling, etc., but i'm sure there are few unexpected things i don't know about. any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Ok, i've found a turbo 400 mated to a np205 tc in my local paper. since they are already mated and i won't have to mess around with trying to mate my tcase to a th400, i'm going to buy it. i just wanted to make sure of a few things: will the drivelines need shorten/lengthening?, do all th400s use the electric kickdown solenoid, and if so, will i have to get a gas pedal from a rig that had a th400 in it? those are the biggest things i'm worried about. thanks so much for any help.

They all have an electric down shift. You should be able to get the parts from another truck and retrofit them into yours. Been a while and I could be wrong but I am thinking the 400 is longer than the 456. How are you going to shift it? Floor shift / cable or are you going to swap in an auto column?

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

if the th400 is going to be a pain in the arse then i might just swap in a th350. I've read a few articles of how easy it is, it just requires an adapter to the tcase and tranny, it there is no modification of the crossmember or driveshafts. I only wanted the th400 because it's beefier and stronger. Whatever tranny I put in is going to have to withstand about 400hp.
