Noisy AC Compressor
« on: April 14, 2026, 09:36:00 am »
i have a titled 1974 C10 Stepside.  Lots of different years of parts on it so I say titled.  The engine is a 350 with no port for a mechanical fuel pump so maybe an 80s block?  Anyway it is using R134 gas for cooling.  The compressor is stock.  I think the guy who replaced it for me years back said an A4.  Anyway it is cooling great but is annoyingly noisy.  Has been noisy since it's installation, but I am becoming more annoyed by the noise.  Is there an after market compressor that is known for quiet operation?  Any way to quiet down the compressor?  Any thoughts appreciated.  Thanks in advance for your response.

Hybrid compressor!  ;)

Just kidding, it's either an A6 or an R4, axial or radial.  Radials are inherently noisy, more so when under r134 head pressures.

The best solution is a Sanden SD508 + bracket kit and hose retro-fit, but it's not for everyone.  Alan Grove made my adapter brackets (https://www.alangrovecomponents.com/Small_Block_Long_Pump.htm), I made the hoses.  It's a lot quieter, and far more efficient.

Thanks for your reply.  So it appears there are a lot of knock offs for the sanden compressor.  Any idea where to get a "real" one?  Amazon has a string of them listed for like 130.00.  I would expect the bona fide sanden runs 300 to 500?  Did you use the full set of brackets or just the air conditioner bracket?  Is your compressor on drivers side or drinkers side??

So I found the AC Upgrade post in the forum.  Answers all of my questions.  Sorry to bother again, but THANK YOU!  You have been most helpful.  I will put up with the noise until it fails and then do the upgrade.  This summer is doors and a hood!
