SM 465 to NV4500 Question

Will the NV4500 directly swap with the SM465 (have an NP205 transfer case)? Will the transmission cover in cab work with the shifter location or will it have to be relocated? Will the driveshaft have to be modified or will it work? Will the NV4500 be good for the highway? It was a while since I drove my truck and when I had it on the highway with my 383 stroker, it just needs top end assistance. Winding out and not getting the performance with the SM465. Is not good for highway? I never had a problem with my stock 350 or just didn't realize a problem in the past.

I want to keep a manual transmission! I think an automatic may be too much trouble!

I don't have answers, as I'm facing the same problem.  The only two ways I can see to go is a Gear Vendor overdrive, and/or an early 4l80e out of GMT400 4x4 that will work with my NP208.

The NV4500 is longer than the SM465 by like a couple inches.  AND its hydraulic, so the bell would need to change and swap to hyrdo, the tunnel cover would need to be modified for length, driveshafts, the front would need to be longer and the back shorter.  output shafts are different on the driveshaft yoke.
This is just what I vaguely remember.  I think for this to work you need a early GM specfic trans, otherwise you need adapters since most were from a Dodge.

When you say the tunnel cover would have to be modified for length, are you saying I would have to cut a new hole (move the hole for the shifter or actually the cover itself would need to be lengthened. That of course would mean the floor board as well.

The SM465 has to go eventually because of its limitations on the highway, I still want my ability to off road and tow when needed. I prefer a manual/standard transmission but could go automatic is needed. Any suggestions on the best way to go would be appreciated Captkaos, or anyone else. I am not very knowledgable when it comes to transmissions other than changing out clutches and minor maintenance.

Shifty, I believe the 4l80e is an automatic transmission. Correct me if I am wrong! I was wanting to stay with my manual/standard Transmission if possible.

it would need to be modified further back as in a different hole further back (NV4500 is longer) and height further back, not to mention the hole in your carpet

Is there an Automatic Transmission that would be a better fit with less modifications. Also, I will have to worry about my exhaust system. I just need better highway driving than what the SM465 provides.

They aren't cheap, but have you considered a Gear Vendors overdrive?  This would allow you to keep the SM465 and Tcase and just bolt it to the back of the transfercase.

indirect yes, direct personal no.  The people I know who have them love them, many drag and drive people use them behind their Powerglide and TH400's

My brother-in-law had one behind a juiced up 7.3 Powerstroke.  It never failed him and he wasn't easy on it either.  If I ever happen to see the right deal for one set up to go behind a SM465 2wheel drive with the correct adaptor I may go after it.  Those Ranger OD units that go between the bell and transmission are interesting as well.
