Exhaust fumes in cab

Hey,

I'm getting exhaust fumes coming into the cab of my 82' Blazer.  The exhaust has been routed just behind the rear tires.  Is this possibly the problem?  What should I check for?

Do you hear any exhaust leaks?  It should be audible.  How do you know it is exhaust fumes?

Could you have an oil leak or trans leak and fluid is dripping on the exhaust, therefore, smoke, smell, etc....??

Is the bed floor rusted out back by the tailgate? Also is your back window seal good? That would be my guess without knowing anything about you truck.

I don't have any rust as far as I know, but should'nt it just flow out the back.  Oil leaks could be a problem though.  I'll double check.  I've oil leaks in cars before and it did'nt smell this bad.

Interesting thing about the flow of the exhaust fumes.I had tailpipes dumping under my pickup somewhere around the rear axle. I was doing some work on the floorboards. I had a large pce. of floor cut out and stopped for the day.Drove to work the next day and I could feel the exhaust coming forward when I felt down through the hole(checked it when I smelt fumes). I believe it swirls around under the truck if it doesn't dump clear of the body. I installed longer tailpipes after I discovered this.

Usually with the windows down it seems worse, but I do still get a hint of it with them up.  I guess it creates a vacuum and sucks it in the back window maybe.  The seals stile seem to be good though.

if your exhaust exits straight out the back, you will get alot of fumes pulled it.  It is best to turn them out the sides to eliminate this.

Well..............It's been a while since I've posted.  Well I found my exhaust problem.  Turns out it was my valve covers leaking oil and basically the fumes of the oil burning on the exhaust manifolds coming in though the vent.  I tightened them up, cleaned off the engine and most of the fumes went away.  Some times when I'm sitting in traffic, I notice a little, but most of it is gone.

Well im back with more exhaust fume info. Turns out the blazer has a lot of holes in the tailgate. If you dont have a good inside window seal, the exhaust still seaps in. Oh and the holes are in the bottum where wires go through and the hinge attaches

     I have done this to eliminate the problem before, for some reason blazers do not like the exhaust that goes straight out the back.

I agree bake 74 and I did that years ago and it helped. The dangerous part is you think it helps but it doesn't get rid or the leak totally and its very easy to get used to the smell. At any rate ive filled the holes with foam rubber and I have the rear window seal on order
