Transfer Case R&R
« on: January 17, 2004, 11:38:00 pm »
I need to swap out my NP203 that is hooked to a TH350 in my '77 K10.  Are there any special instructions that  should know about?  I am guessing that there is just a female "yoke" or input shaft on the transfer case that slips on the output shaft of the tranny and that I do not need to remove the transmission to do this swap.  Obviously I have never done this, but I am mechanically capable...  I am open to any suggestions or tips.

Thanks,
John

R&R of the 203 is easy.  There is an adapter plate between the tranny and t-case(this is where it mounts to the cross member).  Disconnect the shift boot from the floor board...remove the drive shaft from the back and front and pul the bolts from the adapter to the t-case.  Just be carefull!  The 203 is heavy and off balance.  It will try to roll to the chain side.  I recomend strapping to a tranny jack.  I pulled mine a while back and found out the hard way.  A friend and I had to bench press it back into the truck...other than that it's an easy job.

Thanks a bunch for the info....  I don't have a transmission jack or a friend,  so I might be in for a treat!  I will try to rig up something on a floor jack I guess.  I do have a X-Style inground lift,  but I have my '57 Pontiac up on it right now.  I guess one option would be to somehow use it?  I am open to suggestions.

I am heading out this afternoon to buy a good used NP203 for $100.  Wish me luck!
