Headers on a 4x4?

I had my mechanic install some headers on my project truck. My old 1973 Chevy 3/4 ton long bed. The passenger side header ends right at my front drive shaft ! He is talking about takeing out a " bracket " that is right there to make some room. Has anyone overcome this problem? Or should i just but the stock exhaust back on?

Stock exhaust shouldnt fit. You should get a dual kit for headers. I have never had to remove any brackets etc. for headers to clear.

Some low quality headers for 4x4's end up right at the front shaft.  Typically people have heated them up with a pipe in the end and bent it over.  I haven't done this.

I just had some installed on my 75 1/2 ton long bed with no trouble. They are Hooker Competition long tubes...

Your Mechanic is most likely talking about removing the transfer case suoort rod that runs from the bellhousing to the side of the transfer case.  This is a common thing to have to do.  Mine has the bracket removed, don't know if it has to be though, it was already gone when I bought the truck.  I have had no problems yet.  Try the hooker Competition series headers.  Heddmans I would not recommend.  The fact that the Hooker headers allow on the change plugs without a 5/8" wrench might have something to do with that point of view.

I have the cheap Summit brand (really made by dynomax I am told) and they don't hit any brackets.

Sounds like heating the end a bit and bending is a good idea.  I wouldn't remove any support brackets unless you really have to!
