Speedo Making Noise?
« on: March 03, 2006, 01:35:00 pm »
My 1981 InLine 6 is making a scrubbing scraping noise that is intermittant. It starts very slowly with speed and gets to be constant as speed increases. Also, no noise at idle. It is not wheels scraping and does not appear to be tied to the rotation of the tires or belts as it would do this at idle. What I need to know is..... Could it be the speedo cable? If so, can you lubricated it? And How? Any suggestions welcome!

I would check front wheel bearings or driveshaft ujoints.  You say that it is not wheels scraping or tied to rotation, but I think if you check these items, you may find what you are looking for.

just a thought

I've had that problem before, it was the speedo making noise. I had to take out the guage cluster and remove the speedo and then lube it up.

Someone suggested lubing the speedo... How is that done and with what kind of Lube? Do I remove the whole cable or just one end?

Lithium grease sprayed down the end of the cable from the speedo cluster end.

Finally speedo Noise is Gone!

Thanks Guys! I was able to remove the speedo cable and spray the lithium grease into the end. This cleared up the scraping noise. I did try to allow time for the grease to run down the cable by holding the end up and using gravity.

Thanks!
