Need some help.
« on: May 28, 2006, 07:57:00 pm »
Well, I found a 80's 4x4 silverado for 300$ minus the motor. It's 84 plus, has the 4 dual headlights. The truck has a 350 turbo, and a part-time transfer case. I was wondering if the front end stuff - such as the springs, hangers, knuckles, etc would work on my 80 custom deluxe. I think they both have corporate 10 bolt rear ends, would the ring & pinion out of mine work in it? I'm thinking of just swapping the entire front, because I'm not totally sure what's wrong with mine. Plus I'm not sure of the ratio in either and haven't got around to counting the ring & pinion. Any help, and possible things to look for would be great. They are both half ton pickups. I know a lot of the body panels are interchangeable except for the fenders and hood unless you change front supports, but what about suspension wise (leaf springs, hangers, steering assembly, etc?)

I'll probably be changing the entire front end, the leaf springs, the steering box, and all components connected to it, the sway bar but I want to be sure it will work before I put out the money.

The front ends, springs etc. should be the same. If you rearend and the other are both ten bolts then you can swap stuff back and forth. Sounds like you will have more than $300 worth of parts if you were to cut it up and sell stuff from it.

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

I am sure this goes without saying, but the front and rear gearing has to be close to work.

Suspension wise everything is the same.  Body wise everything from the doors/cab back are the same.

Thanks for the answers, I'm going go to back and look at front end to verify that it's a corporate 10 bolt (so I can just change the ring and pinion out of mine) then I'm going to buy it. I'll be stripping the front end stuff out, and the rest will be sold. I think my brother in-law is in need of a transmission so the cost for it may go down considerably :)
