How much is it worth?
« on: June 14, 2006, 10:39:00 pm »
I might have a chance to buy a 1973-1986 Chevy Half ton. The truck is short-box(stepside), regular cab, has some rust between the drivers side door and where ther fender well starts, the patch of rust is about 4 inches long and 2 inches tall,(nothing a little metal and welding cant fix). I think they parked the truck because it had trouble running and starting and they had alot of $$ and bought some new vehicles. This truck has been sitting for 1 1/2 years untouched. The paint is a sick yellow, with a few small green and grey patches. The tires arent the best either. I havent had a chance to ask about the truck, and im not sure if they will take me serious either, im only 13. But now the question is if it is for sale how much do you think the truck is worth? I know most of the info of this truck because it is my neighbors daughters truck, and she used to live at the house beside me but then moved.

Is it 2 or 4 wheel drive?  I would simply go and talk to them.  Explain your situation, and go from there.  I am 17 now and I got my first one at age 14, not much older than you are now.  I traded one of those Honda Odyssey Dune buggy things for it.  So, I guess I gave about $650.00 or so in traded stuff for it... I had the receipts, so it worked out well.  I am actually trying to find that truck and buy it back.

Anyway, if it is indeed, not running, offer him $500.00 or so, but be ready to get dirty first.  Crawl under it and in it if they are home and say that you can, and check for rust.  Also, find the VIN plates.  They are riveted either in the driver side door frame or under the dash in a visible hole near the Driver side lower corner of the windshield.  Look at the rivets.  If they are not star rivets(look like stars or flowers)  WALK AWAY and make no further attempt to buy it because the tags will have been swapped(illegal).  However, that is rare.  Looks at the frame near the steering box and check it fot cracks.  Also check near the rear shocks and floorpans.  Find all of the rust and make it go away.

I am hoping it is a maybe $200 come haul it off. We got a big old Dodge 4x that will easily be able to pull it out. And the truck is 2wd. I think I will ask about it tommorow.

Man, to be young again.  My first vehicle was a fixer upper and I was 14 when i got it. I enjoyed each and every thing I did to it to get her looking/driving great. Those were some great years. I learned so much about the vehicle and learned to fix anything on it. Rebuilt my first engine at 16.

That truck looks like a great project.  Hope you get it.  If so, ...customize it as you want and have fun doing it.

You seem like an intelligent young man and am sure you will do the right thing to acquire it.

I had a step side identical to that 250 I6 motor. Got it for free took it out wailed the crap out of it till we managed to break the TH350 in half ( my budy was driving about 50+ MPH and I reached over and tossed it in reverse ). Then I sold off the motor etc. Sold the bed to a guy, him and his kid narrowed and shortened it for a Toyota pickup.

That is too funny!!  Did you kiss the windshield??

I'm surprised the crank didn't break in half.

Nope, I was prepared for it, he was " what the _____ happened? " It was dark and he didn't see me reach over and shift it. I was sitting in the middle my other buddy on the pasengers side freaked out for a minute, ass he slid onto the floor under the dash. The tires just locked for a minute and then a loud bang, & we were coasting. Every so often it would bind, & grind then coast on. It was all down hill to my house about a mile from there so we just coasted all the way into my driveway laughing our fool heads off.
We destroyed many a perfectly good vehicle the three of us, for no apparent reason other than being destructive or seeing what a transmision or rearend could take.
