New calipers or recon? or upgrade?
« on: October 09, 2006, 11:04:00 am »
I am putting new front brake lines on my 1978 K10 truck and noticed my bleed nipples have been knocked off (just bought the truck).

They are rusted pretty badly so thought I'd just get new or refurb calipers.  I have always bought new in the past but am working on a very tight budget.

I can get 2 complete new calipers online for $100 which sounds reasonable (does it?).  But is there a comparably priced upgrade I could do from a more modern truck?

Specs: '78 K10, 6" lift, 35" tires.  Just moved from the UK with no knowledge of US vehicles!

For just calipers, that seems high.  On my 79, i can get, if memory serves me, new reman'd calipers for under $30 each. You have to use your old ones as cores and trade them in.

Ditto, you should be able to get rebuilt calipers for under $30 apiece.  Last set I got didn't require a core.

What do you mean by "cores" - do you mean I might have to send my old caliper in? do they just rebuild your own one?

Could you suggest where I might get a set of refurb'd ones?  I can't find any concrete links online.

Cheers

YOu won't be getting your actual calibers back.  You buy the new ones, then after you replace the old ones, just take them back so you get your core money back.  They will inturn send those off to rebuild and the next guy will get those. Say for instance your new refurbished calibers cost $30 each, you pay $60 for both.  Then once you get the old ones off, you take the old ones back w/ your receipt and you get approximately $10 back for each one. The salesman can tell you how much you will get back for your old ones.

You can go to any name chain store like napa autozone advance, etc...

Great stuff - thanks for your help guys.  My local Napa has them for $20 each if I take my old ones in.  Sweet!!
