A used speedometer should do the job. The odometer works off a nylon gear, and the gear strips off the little shaft it rides on. Then the numbers won't turn over. It can be fixed but replacing is so much easier-
A couple of things can be done for the cable since you have the instrument cluster out.
1. The cable needs lubed once in a while so it won't bind up. It's originally coated with white grease and can be recoated if you pull the cable out of its shield, or like me, squirt some 30 wt oil down into the cable without removing it (lazy guy way).
2. You can get under the truck, disconnect the cable at the tranny tailshaft and chuck it up into a drill motor, turn on the drill and have someone tell you if the cable at the instrument cluster is spinning. If it is, it's not binding or broken.
