Speedometer or cable

Which would be the more likely culprit here: The speedometer does not like to turn over at #9. The more 9's lined up the harder it is to turn over. It makes a very loud annoying clicking sound over and over until it finally turns. A new cable or more seriously a new instrument?

It's gotta be the instrument. The cable just transfers the motion of the gears at the tranny.

Don, Thanks once again. I am getting a used speedometer, instead of spending 200 for a new one, unless you think it's not worth the time to install a used one which is said to be functional? Also if cable is OK leave it alone, or might as well switch it out as well? Thanks Rich

A used speedometer should do the job. The odometer works off a nylon gear, and the gear strips off the little shaft it rides on. Then the numbers won't turn over. It can be fixed but replacing is so much easier-
A couple of things can be done for the cable since you have the instrument cluster out.
1. The cable needs lubed once in a while so it won't bind up. It's originally coated with white grease and can be recoated if you pull the cable out of its shield, or like me, squirt some 30 wt oil down into the cable without removing it (lazy guy way).
2. You can get under the truck, disconnect the cable at the tranny tailshaft and chuck it up into a drill motor, turn on the drill and have someone tell you if the cable at the instrument cluster is spinning. If it is, it's not binding or broken.

You can spin the speedometer counterclockwise to check it out. As you spin it about 15 times or so, the number should start to move.
