Question about VIN

Well, I just picked up two 84 1/2ton trucks, one is a long bed, and the other is a shorty step. The shorty has a dead six and a rusty cab, the long bed has a good cab and 350. What I want to do is swap the engines and cabs, but I don't know which VIN I will need to use. Oh, and I almost forgot the best part, they were both FREE!!!!!  Help me please.

That would be a better question for your local DMV.  Tampering with VIN's isn't something I would speak of in a public domain.

If they are both '84 though, just use the whole cab from the good truck.

Switch the cabs and use the vin tag from the old cab,You want to keep the vin tag the same for the frame that matches the title(its stamped on the frame) And allways keep a copy of the title from the doner truck(there should be numbers stamped in the cab to tell what vin numbers it came from the factory with) That way you can prove that you had owned the truck when you switched the parts.
 Like if you lived in Ohio and bought a out of state truck and wanted to regy it in Oh the state troopers would have to inspect it and look for these numbers(they have a book on all cars and trucks that show them where these numbers are)before you can regy the truck.

Your local DMV can tell you exactly what you need to do.  You may end up with a "reconstructed" title, but it will be compltely legal and clear.  You will need both titles though, and bills of sale.

My truck is registered as an '85 c-10 when in reality the frame is a '77 K20. I have mine registered to what the VIN says on the cab, nothing to do with the frame. Bought it out of state and had the cops inspect it, no problem.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply, seems this board doesn't like Firefox. I checked with the DMV and they said that I would be issued a new number and the truck would become a "Special Construction" vehicle. So does this mean I will have the first 84 chevy truck kit car

Firefox shouldn't be an issue,  I only use Firefox.
Yours definitely won't be the first which is why I suggested checking with your local DMV.  That is what they typically require in a lot of states.
