Voltmeter Plug In Difference
« on: February 23, 2007, 11:41:00 pm »
I change out the plastic housing that the guages all mount to on my 76 crew cab K20 4x4.  The old one was damaged at the mounting holes from heat & age.  I found one at a salvage yard that appeared to be identical since it had all the same guages.  Upon installing it, the voltmeter did not work.  Upon closer inspection, it appears that the old housing w/circuit board has two metal clips that the voltmeter plugs into at the 3:00 and 9:00 position.  The new housing has the two metal clips positioned in the 12:00 and 3:00 position.  The Voltmeter has 3- threaded studs that slip into two clips to connect the circuit.  The 12:00 threaded stud was not connected to any clip originally.

Obviously the studs on the back of the voltmeter have to be mounted into the clips positioned in the old housing.  I think I could remove the old circuit board and install it on the new housing but this does not solve the clip positioning, only the electrical if there was a 9:00 clip on the new housing.  I'm not sure if I could cut out and install the clip into that position.  It appears to be grommetted onto the plastic.

I also thought of cutting the 12:00 positioned threaded stud off on the back of the voltmeter since it was not in use with the old housing.  Then I would somehow wire in the 12:00 clip into the 9:00 threaded stud on the voltmeter.

Is there an easier way?  I guess I could go back to the salvage yard and purchase the voltmeter removed from the guage housing I purchased there.  Don't know if it works or not.  Would have to check it out.

What are other options for this dilemma?

Tom

One of the studs receives 12 volts and the other goes to ground to complete the circuit. Rather than trying to rewire  I think your better option is to find the right gauge, as long as the other gauges are all working correctly.

76-77 Gauge clusters are specific to only those years.  If you are swapping from anything other than that year you need a wiring diagram to get it right.  If the new cluster was from a 73-75, DON'T swap it unless you rewire basically the whole interior, they are wired for AMPS not Volts.
